Audio Podcasts and Online Communication

This week we will be talking about how the podcast The Communication Diva by Jenn Swanson ties into our learning that we have been doing in class. In this episode, episode 80, Swanson has special guest life coach Samantha Skelly, and they discuss whether or not the millennial generation has the ability to listen or if they are simply hearing since they are so absorbed into their technologies.
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast, and the piece of classroom material I would like to tie this podcast into is the article we read this week by Mike Wendling titled 2015: The year that angry won the internet. Wendling's article describes how in 2015 there was much debate around what constitutes "hate speech" and online harassment/ trolling, there was a major increase in hate speech and racial slurs being used online, and if there was any hope that there would ever be a return to normalcy. Wendling states how "increased hate online is in part a reflection of the wider culture of public discourse" (Wendling, Mike 2015). Just like how Swanson and Skelly talk about in their podcast, I think much of this anger and negative discourse online could be avoided and terminated all together if people felt like they are being listened to in their everyday conversations with one another. Skelly notes how "listening is an art, listening takes some work. Hearing is a very robotic, automatic... sort of reaction to who your speaking with" (Swanson, Jenn 2013). If we continue to have discourse with eachother in person that is next to meaningless and disconnected, then I am sure the anger online and the frustration that people feel in their lives will only worsen.

Another way I would like to tie this podcast into our classroom material is through our own podcast that we have to make. I enjoyed listening to this podcast not only because I found the material very interesting, but I also enjoyed it because it inherently gave me tips about how to make my only audio only podcast. The most important thing that I took away from this podcast was how much voice inflection and describing visuals is in order to keep your audience engaged and comprehending your material since they have no visuals to go off of. Some other aspects of this podcast that i enjoyed and that I want to tie into my own podcast is the musical transitions/ keeping music on in the background, having a poster visual to look at (just like the one at the top of this article that Swanson has), and also speaking very clearly and concisely.
